ICCLR continues to deliver a successful international corrections programme. Since 2007, the programme’s focus has been assisting the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to deliver a programme with the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and the Government of Southern Sudan to enhance the capacity of the Southern Sudan Prisons Service (SSPS). The Centre provides support to programme activities by serving as an implementing partner alongside UNODC and UNMIS. The overall objective is to assist the process of prison reform in Southern Sudan by building leadership capacity within the SSPS and addressing the circumstances of prisoners with special needs.
For 18 years, ICCLR and the Correctional Service of Canada collaborated on an international corrections programme, which promoted renewal of sentencing and correctional practices at the international level. The programme’s concrete technical assistance projects contributed to the overall objectives of the initiative. They included activities in China, Uganda and Central America. The aim of these projects was to promote, through technical assistance, the use of a strategic approach to the implementation of human rights standards and principles as well as other UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, as they relate to corrections and the treatment of offenders.
