ICCLR's International Criminal Court (ICC) Programme

ICC and China

2008 Programme

In partnership with the Beijing Normal University, the Centre's ICC-China programme focused on promoting China's accession to the Rome Statute. As the largest Asian country, and an emerging economic and political power in the region, China’s accession to the Rome Statute would both influence the rest of the Asian region and strengthen the current Chinese criminal justice reform process.
The Centre's programme had three main objectives:

  1. Address the concerns of the Chinese Government with the Rome Statute and encourage the growth of discussions and interest in acceding to the Rome Statute.
  2. Sustain and expand upon the emerging awareness and support for the accession to the Rome Statute of the ICC in China.
  3. Assist China by working with the Research College of Criminal Jurisprudence (RCCJ) in its on-going work on the ICC in China.

On March 28 and 29, 2008, lectures were held in Beijing and Tianjin, China, where presentations by Canadian and Chinese experts clarified ICC procedures and facilitated progressive dialogue and debate on the accession to the Rome Statute in China. PowerPoint Presentation
